A little bit of calm in a busy world….
I like to offer a little bit of calm in a busy world of hectic schedules with my holistic effective treatments. I believe in the powerful healing effects of informed touch and how massage plays a vital role in reducing pain, maintaining good health and energy balance. I believe by taking time out to relax and de-stress the body and mind, that your whole being slows down, relaxes, and becomes much calmer, rejuvenated and rebalanced. I work in two clinics, Feelgood Balham in Balham, (SW12) and Shenshakti in Belgravia (SW1), London.
I treat holistically and therefore tailor-make your treatment according to individual needs, so elements of the different therapies may be combined. I use a variety of techniques, both Eastern and Western, to help you get the maximum benefit out of your treatment, whether it is for pain reduction, relaxation or de-stressing.
Advanced Clinical Massage
Treatments - 1 hour or 1 ½ hours (recommended for first app)
Clinical massage is specific and effective massage that treats chronic pain conditions or acute injuries in a safe nurturing way. With clinical massage we will aim to reduce your pain in
1-6 weekly outcome-based treatments.
Pain can be caused by occupational injuries (eg repetitive strain injuries), long-term postural problems (eg rounded shoulders), lifestyle (eg carrying babies, gardening, long-distance driving), stress (eg headaches), overloading (eg carrying a heavy bag), trauma (eg fall or crash), degeneration (eg arthritis) or sports injury (eg ITB friction syndrome)
If you are suffering from long-term pain/ache that just won't go away or comes and goes in phases, or a more recent pain that has an obvious cause clinical massage can help. I can help treat common pain conditions such:
• Neck, back and shoulder problems
Egs frozen shoulder, restricted movement, stiff neck and shoulders,
neck and shoulder pain, thoracic outlet syndrome,
headaches, jaw pain, whiplash, tinnitis.
• Back problems
Egs stiffness, sciatica, herniated disc, lower back pain
• Hip and pelvis pain
Egs Sacro-iliac dysfuntion, piriformis syndrome, hip pain
• Postural problems
Egs lordosis, kyphosis, scoliosis, leg length discrepancy
• Sporting injury
Egs Shin splints, ITB friction syndrome, tight hamstrings,
sprains and strains
• Repetitive strain injuries
Egs, Tennis and Golfers elbow, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
• Leg/knee/foot pain
When muscles and tendons become damaged or impaired, knotted and tense or immobile, clinical massage provides a healing treatment that can be gentle or strong, deep or shallow. We will work within your pain threshold.
This treatment includes advanced massage techniques (myofascial release, *trigger point therapy, soft tissue release, acupressure, stretching (passive, PNF & AIS), hydrotherapy and table shiatsu) to bring balance back to the body. A detailed consultation will be given at the beginning of the treatment and after-care advice and recommended stretches to do at home will be given at the end of the treatment.
*A Trigger point is a hyper-irritable point found in muscles, tendons, ligaments or fascia (ie a knot) that is tender on compression and often refers pain in predictable and often surprising patterns. Eg1 A temple headache is often caused from trigger points in the upper trapezius muscle. Eg2 Deep ear pain can be caused by trigger points in your neck muscles. Trigger point therapy focuses in de-activating these knots and stretching the muscles to bring them back to healthy alignment to improve flexiblity and movement.

Advanced clinical massage holistically treats the whole body and traces the discomfort as far as possible back to the original cause, healing both the cause of the disorder as well as the symptoms.

This popular massage uses a wide range of techniques, including myofascial release work, swedish strokes, stretching, acupressure work, trigger point work and effective deeper techniques, to work out muscular and emotional tension and reduce stress. This massage is great if you just want to switch off and de-stress. Deep tissue techniques will get to those areas of tightness that need extra attention and release. Indian Head Massage
Treatments - ½ hr or 45mins
Based on the ancient traditional form of Champi (head massage) practised in India for over 1,000 years. This is particularly good for office workers as it concentrates on the shoulders, upper arms, neck, scalp and face releasing tension and promoting a sense of well-being, tranquillity and relaxation. This treatment is done fully clothed with no oil and in a seated position. The areas worked on often suffer from muscular tension from sitting in front of a computer and this is a lovely treatment which helps to release that tension, alleviate eye-strain and relieve stress held in the head. Deeply relaxing.

Treatments - 1hr or 1½ hrs
Reiki is a hands-on healing technique. Reiki is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life (Rei) Energy (Ki). It is the vital life energy which flows through all living things and can be activated for the purpose of healing. Reiki practitioners tap into this universal life energy to promote healing in others. By placing their hands on the recipient’s body the recipient’s energy flow is activated thus strengthening their energy flow and self-healing ability. Based on the Usui method, a Reiki treatment is deeply relaxing as mind and body become more balanced. This treatment is done fully clothed on a massage table.
TESTIMONIAL "I would highly recommend Charlotte as a reiki practitioner. She is professional, calm, friendly and a course of treatment with her really helped with sleep and stress levels." Victoria H

How massage works….
On a physical level massage invigorates body systems which may have got blocked. Massage helps the body to relax and remove tensions. Advanced massage techniques release these tensions held in the body, toxins are released and removed, circulation is improved as the supply of oxygen and nutrients is increased, immunity and energy flow are boosted. Knots in muscles are broken down and removed so muscle tissue is healthier and movement is eased. Pain is reduced and eliminated. Massage improves your physical, mental and emotional well being leaving the body calm and rebalanced. The touch of massage is deeply soothing and comforting for the mind, body, and spirit aiding the body's self-healing ability.
A little bit about de-stressing…
Stress can be both positive and negative. Sometimes stress helps us perform to our best ability but sometimes stress effects us negatively when we don’t respond successfully to it. If we hold too much negative stress in our bodies, we start to see the physical effects eg insomnia, migraines, constipation.
When our body perceives danger our flight of fight response kicks in. Adrenalin is released to help us, our heart rate increases, our blood vessels contract, our blood pressure rises and our digestive system shuts down, and our muscles contract – all to help us move quickly either to fight or make a quick escape. If the perceived danger is removed or we have responded and escaped the danger the fight of flight has been useful. But if the stress cause has not gone the unused stress response remains in the body and it can leave us feeling tense and unrelaxed. This fight or flight response is useful when responding to real physical threat but in today’s fast moving modern world, the causes of stress are more indistinct - eg moving house, relationship problems, changing jobs, commuting - without knowing that the danger has passed it is difficult for the body to know when it is time to relax , slow down and recover. As we react more and more to stressful situations and the responses are not released or we don’t deal with them or remove the stress our body will physically show distress.
How does massage help us de-stress?
Massage allows essential switch-off time for relaxation and recuperation. It also stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the system which slows the body down, ie opposite to the fight of flight response. It helps to relax all the body systems bringing the body back into a state of balance.
